FROGS and INSECTS

I'm a big fan of the smaller creatures, which are often overlooked, but are no less beautiful or fascinating. I majored in Entomology, and for my Bachelor of Science Honours degree I studied the impact of remnant grasslands on butterfly communities. During the university holidays I also spent months illustrating the different insect taxonomic groups for an entomological book and doing detailed drawings of fly faces and genitalia for the KwaZulu-Natal Museum.

Inspiration: I always love creating frogs... and painted reed frogs have such vibrant colours, and so much variation between individuals... perfect subjects! All made from glass.

Inspiration: The little Painted Reed Frogs are one of South Africa’s most distinctive (and colourful!) frogs. They occur in many colour variations, often with black, white, red and yellow. This one is hand made solely from glass.

Inspiration: The hardworking dung beetle moving his ball of animal dung, which is both a food store and nest. These are such amazing little critters and I loved putting together all the different elements in this one.

Inspiration: A hardworking dung beetle moving a ball of animal dung. The beetle is hand made from glass, and the ball from dung, stones and wire!

Inspiration: The hard working little dung beetles! The males with their bright iridescent colour and rolling the balls, while the black females wait to lay their eggs in the dung balls. This bench went to a new home in Cape Town.
